SAINTS IN OMER RUN

Southampton are chasing Trabzonspor's £1.4million-rated former Arsenal and West Ham striker Omer Riza. Saints picked up on Riza, 26, through their European scouting network and, after making an enquiry, are now monitoring his early season form with a view to a firm bid. Former Gunners trainee Riza is keen to return to England, where he also spent three years with the Hammers before enjoying success at Cambridge. Trabzonspor want £1.4m for Riza but St Mary's boss George Burley would hope to pay less than £1m.

He was a fair player in Arsenal's youth side, albeit at a time when the academy wasn't producing players of first team quality. He went on loan to Den Haag for several months. I remember that Dennis Bergkamp said a few times that he'd seen Riza on Dutch TV footie, and thought he looked very promising, but the following summer he was released, and signed for West Ham. I'm slightly surprised by this story - Riza has done well out in Turkey - first for Denizlispor, and the for Trabzonspor. He was quite badly injured last season, and came back to England for treatment.
