Newcastle Jets midfielder Nick Carle was today rewarded for his Johnny Warren Medal-winning season, as he was named in the 23 man Qantas Socceroos squad for next month’s AFC Cup.
In addition to Carle’s inclusion, Jets’ players Mark Bridge & Jade North were also named as official reserves for the squad, which will go into camp on the 21st of June. The announcement comes as welcome news for the Jets players after a successful 2006/2007 Hyundai A-League campaign.
Carle clearly impressed the right people in his 20 minute stint off the bench against Uruguay last Saturday, earning what is considered a much deserved return call-up to the national team.
Jets coach Gary van Egmond was delighted for Carle, describing the selection as “great reward for hard work.”
“I’m over the moon for him” van Egmond added, “because I know just how hard he’s worked for it.”
“It’s fantastic that a player from the A-League, let alone our own club, has been selected for such a prestigious tournament. There are only three other A-League players in the full squad, so to be included really is indicative of Nicky’s quality.”
Jets’ fans are no doubt waiting in anticipation for the Socceroos’ first game on the 8th of July to see what impact Carle will have. Gary van Egmond is no different, and is looking forward to seeing what role his playmaker will serve alongside the likes of Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill.
“His next step is to establish himself in the eleven.” van Egmond said.
